Conversion

Shaare Zedek Congregation welcomes people from all backgrounds, particularly those interested in converting to Judaism.  To that end we provide a programme in preparation for conversion. The program operates under the auspices of the Conservative Beit Din of Montreal. Rabbi Bright sits on the Beit Din together with Rabbi Lionel Moses of Shaare Zion Congregation and Rabbi Ronnie Cahana of Beth El Congregation.

Jewish law, as spelled out in the Talmud and the codes, allows for conversion, setting a number of requirements to be met by the potential convert before being accepted.  These requirements include a period of study, a level of familiarity with and practice of Jewish ritual obligations and a spiritual or theological commitment.  The actual process of conversion entails ritual immersion in a Mikvah (Ritual bath), Brit Milah (ritual circumcision) - in the case of men - and accepting the commandments (Mitzvot).

The conversion programme at Shaare Zedek is a joint program run by the three Conservative Synagogues in Montreal namely Shaare Zedek, Shaare Zion and Beth El.  Rabbi Moses administers the program and each of the Rabbi's teaches portions providing two hours of enriching, thoughtful discussion.

Should you be considering conversion to Judaism or simply interested in learning more about Judaism.  Please contact Rabbi Bright either by email at rabbi@shaarezedek.ca or by phone at 514-484-1122 ext. 110. In your email please include a couple of sentences about yourself and a couple of sentences about your interest in Judaism.
